We raised a lot of chickens on the farm. Both meat birds and egg layers. To slaughter them, my dad would put them upside down in a steel galvanized funnel, and lop their heads off.
I remember seeing one get loose without its head. It actually ran out of the barn, and into the barnyard. It was a bizarre sight. The chicken ran full speed into a fence post, got up, ran full speed into another fence post, then got up one more time and ran full speed into the wall of the barn. That ended its journey.
My human response was to yell a warning before each collision. I do not know if chickens can hear with their heads on, but I know for sure they cannot with their heads off!
Some aimless people seem to run from one collision to another. In a hurry, going nowhere. This reminds me of the behavior of Satan. When God asked where he had been, Satan responded, “From going to and fro in the earth…” (Job 1:7, 2:2).
The demons are also a restless bunch. Matthew 12:43 describes their activity this way, “When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.”
In Daniel’s prophecy of the last days, mankind is characterized like Satan : “...even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.” (Daniel 12:4).
One songwriter described people today as “running helter skelter to destruction with their fingers in their ears.” Like a chicken with its head cut off!
Many are so busy running around they have convinced themselves that they cannot even go to church. They are are too busy doing that which has no eternal value. The collisions are coming. I would yell but I do not know if they have ears to hear. "He that hath ears to hear, let him hear." (Matthew 11:15).
