On the farm we had to collect the eggs, wash them, dry them, candle them, weigh them, sort them (small, medium, large, extra large), box them, take them to the store, display them, and sell them. A lot of work went in to selling eggs.
When collecting eggs, great care was needed to be sure you did not drop the basket or knock it off of a table. Thus the adage: “Do not put all your eggs in one basket.”
This is good advice in life also. For example:
1. Do not put all your love into one person.
“For God so loved the world...” John 3:16. God loves everybody, not just one person. As a result, He gets a lot of love back from some.
How sad to see someone love just one person, then have that person die or divorce them. How sad to see some widows and widowers who cease to love and live after a spouse dies.
We are taught to “love one another.” It is important to love our mates – and it is Biblical. But there is more to life than just one person or family. We need to love every person we can.
2. Do not put all your money into one investment.
When the hurricanes hit down south recently, many lost everything they owned.
Jesus said, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:” (Matthew 6:19,20) Invest generously in the Lord’s work. Nothing on earth can take that investment from you.
3. Do not put all your seed into one hole.
On the farm, you would never dig a hole and pour all of your seed into it. You scatter the seed everywhere. Some grows, some does not.
“The sower soweth the word.” Mark 4:14
The adults and teens of our church have passed over 50,000 gospel tracts in the last year (2007)! Each one was handed to an eternal soul. Some say it does not work anymore, but we have received letters back in the mail from souls who have been saved!
