Somehow my brothers and I became the recipients of a boomerang. I was told that if you flung this thing as hard as you could, it would fly up into the sky, stop, and come back to you. Being the analytical type, I knew that was not true.
My reason was based on observation and experiment. Up to that point in my life, everything I had ever thrown (footballs, basketballs, sticks, stones, rocks, etc.) had flown away from me, and continued in that direction until stopping. Why would this strange-shaped objects be different?
I had a pretty good arm, so I put my all into a sidearm throw and let her fly. Off it went, slightly downward, then it sharply curved up into the sky, just like I thought. It was no different than anything else I had ever thrown. I was right, they were wrong!
Then, suddenly, it seemed to stop in the middle of the sky – still twirling like a helicopter – and come back in my direction. Being the analytical type, I thought, "This isn't possible!" As I stared in amazement, it began a descent in my direction at breakneck speed. At just the right second I decided to forgo analysis and hit the deck. The boomerang flew over my head right where my neck had been, and crashed into the barn. Whew!
Sin is a lot like the boomerang. We play with it and let it fly. It i’s fun. It will not hurt anyone. Everyone is doing it. Then it comes back at us with devastating consequences. The injuries are often severe. Sometimes they last a life time. You a’re better off not flirting with it. Leave it lie. Do not pick it up.
"But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren." (James 1:14-16).
