A Missionary & A Handyman

Since moving into our house we’ve experienced a few surprises. One thing we learned right away was when using your appliances for the first time~READ THE MANUAL!  You just never know what amazing things your washer is capable of until it’s too late.  And being in a foreign country you also realize that the manufacturer doesn’t always give you a warning.  That being said, I’ve had some experience hooking up appliances but this was something I didn’t see coming.  The drum inside our washer had been bolted down from the inside to keep it from moving during delivery (which I appreciate) , however, no one mentioned that to us.  So being a good husband, I hooked up the washer for my wife and we put in our very first load.  When the washer reached the spin cycle the entire machine starting jumping off the ground.  I’ve seen overloaded washers shake and make noise but this machine was literally jumping across our floor!  For a few moments it looked like our dryer was losing in a robotic boxing match.  Thankfully, it was a simple fix and we counted it a lesson learned.  As I’ve been working around the house, Abigail has been a curious observer.  She has fun trying to sweep and wash the floors.  Whatever daddy and mommy are doing~she wants to be right in the middle of it.  I’m so thankful for our baby girl and her sweet smile.  She makes being a handyman even more fun.

A Fancy Roast

Since our arrival in March I’ve tried a few Filipino delicacies (some more desirable than others) and this week I was able to enjoy another one.  Lechon is probably one of the Philippines’ most recognized dishes other than balut and is one of my personal favorites.  A whole pig is roasted over charcoal, rotisserie style, until the skin becomes crispy.  It is a little intimidating to see the whole pig sitting on your dining room table as you get ready to eat but the taste is phenomenal!  Sometimes you can see pig farmers transfer a live pig in a sack on their motorcycle!  Fresh delivery for the buyer!  The church just recently had a fellowship meal and someone provided a beautiful lechon for us to enjoy!  Others also brought their very best and that was a blessing to see too.  The people here do not have much but they have been taught to give and have seen the Lord bless them for it!

Our New Life in Cebu

Things have been busy as we settle into this beautiful country.  Our time here has almost added up to one month and we’re still adjusting to the new culture and climate.  Right now we’re in the middle of the Philippine summer and temperatures can easily rise to almost a hundred degrees with humidity.  Back home this would be enough to keep most people in their homes but here it is a daily part of life that the people have learned to live with.  Abigail is adjusting well and loves her new surroundings.  Her blue eyes and light colored hair have made her a tiny celebrity. She has been a great conversation starter with different people as we travel on public transportation.  I think she would make a great soul winning partner!  Easter came and with it, Holy week, one of the biggest holidays in the Philippines.  It’s a time when people take vacation and celebrate…and almost nothing can be done throughout the week.  I was reminded of this when I went to get our P.O. Box address and the only lady who could give me the address had taken a vacation to China and wouldn’t be back for days.  Yes, we’re still acclimating to the new pace of our new home.  Praise the Lord we’re finally here!  There are some frustrations but what a blessing to finally be in Cebu.

Great news!  We bought our plane tickets!  We are so excited to be in this final phase of our deputation.  It’s hard to believe that we’re almost there; our time on the road has been fun but we’re looking forward to moving to our new home.  God has blessed us over and over again and we feel so privileged to serve Him in Cebu.  Please keep us in prayer as we finish traveling and prepare to leave.  We have a few more churches to visit and Elizabeth and I have to finish packing our things.  Praise the Lord for great things He has done!!!
